Twenty Six Point Crazy

Hey, good morning.  Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter.

Over the last few months, I've a series of conversations about training for a full marathon.  They went a little like this.

Kim's Friend/Family Member/Blogger Buddy:  So, when do you think you'll start training for that first marathon?

Kim:  Marathon?  F*ck that.  I haven't been able to run pain-free since 2009, I'm not going to abuse my body like that.  Not happening. End 'o story.

Fast forward to April, my Run Less Run Faster book is looking increasingly tattered, and my browser history looks a little like this:

So, Good Will Hunting fantasies aside, my mind has been increasingly preoccupied with finding... drumroll please... a marathon plan.

And not just finding one.  Carefully researching, creating, editing and re-editing, switching my calendar around long runs... basically, planning to run a marathon.  

What's my problem?  I wanted to wait to run a marathon until after I'm definitely done having kids, until I'm a few years post-injury, and until life slows down a bit.  But now, I feel like my mind is all systems go for training, and nothing has changed with my uterus, my femur, or my schedule.  

In four weeks, I'm running the Wisconsin Half Marathon in Kenosha, WI.  If this goes well (a decent time, and feeling strong and happy, and not wishing for death the whole time like at my last half), then I start training for the Fox Cities Marathon in September.  As in the full marathon.  Yikes.

  9. See you in Kenosha and then in MADISON!!! I'm all about Running Less and Faster so don't look at me to talk you out of a marathon. Just saying.

  11. You can totally do it! I did the run faster plan but I am glad to hear you are making your own plan. It is a good one but brutal! In fact in the end I bombed cuz it did me over but I will say there are great workouts in there that I use in my training now. I just don't overload it like the book does.

  12. I'm using a Hal Higdon Novice 1, and I really like it. It's flexible, only 4 days a week, and I can make as much or as little of it as I choose.

    It is super fun to plan for a marathon, though. I bought a new log, new gear, spent a good month tinkering with programs and dreaming about long runs. Now here I am, about to do my first 20 miler...and it's pretty awesome, I must say.

    My next one will totally be a destination race, though!

  14. Oh, and you wanna see crazy? I actually spent about an hour on the Grandfather Mountain Marathon website.

    Once you start considering doing a mountain marathon in July? You have officially gone off the deep end.

    Then again...I kinda like flapping around in the deep end.

  17. I completed my first marathon this past November. I said I wouldn't take a year off before signing up for another one and here, I signed up for one already :). Training for a marathon turns into a lifestyle. You should def try :)

    Anyway, I'm new to your blog. Glad I stumbled upon it. It will be great to read about your journey!!

  19. YOU CAN TOTALLY DO IT!!! I'm training with the Run Less, Run Faster plan and I totally am in love. Weird freaky injuries aside, I think it has helped me be a less injured runner. I feel odd saying that because if you've read my blog at all, then you know I've pretty much been injured since January 1. HOWEVER, I started the plan AFTER my shin splints, and the shoes that gave me the neuroma had nothing to do with how I'm training. Also- can't help that I have bow legs and hips that don't stay in place because of birthing human beings. Soooo..... all that aside- I always feel fresh when I run, and I've been able to get faster without doing virtually any speed work. Plus, the training was so much easier on my family.

    Also- Why sleep with Matt Damon when you could sleep with Matthew McCaunaghey? (or however the crap you spell his last name.)
